Intermediate Microeconomics: Modeling Behavior is suitable for Intermediate Microeconomics courses often alternatively called, Microeconomic Theory, Intermediate Microeconomic Analysis, Intermediate Price Theory, or similar titles taught at the undergraduate and master’s levels and four-year colleges and universities.

Intermediate Microeconomics: Modeling Behavior is designed to bridge the gaps in knowledge and skills across different levels of student preparation. As a result, faculty can spend more time teaching the material at level rather than juggling students’ differing capabilities. To accomplish this goal, the book’s intuitive and mathematically solid approach leverages unique learning aids, such as author-prepared tutorial videos, and process descriptions featuring unique side-by-side explanations. Utilizing the unique capabilities of FlatWorld’s Homework system, student ability to manipulate equations and relationships among variables is assessed and a robust set of Homework items prepared by the author. The result is a standard approach to teaching microeconomic theory with distinct and innovative learning features.

Patrick M. Walsh

Saint Michael's College

Patrick M. Walsh (PhD University of Michigan) is Associate Professor of Economics and Chair of the Economics Department at Saint Michael’s College (Vermont). He consistently teaches microeconomic theory, introductory economics, public finance, economics of healthcare, and money and banking.

Patrick’s research has published articles in Economics of Education Review, where he investigated parental involvement and school size effects, as well as the margin effects of school choice programs. His work on family behavior in school environments further appeared in Public Finance Review, contributing to broader understanding of public-good versus private incentives in educational settings. In addition to education-focused journals, Patrick co-authored research has been included in edited volumes such as the National Bureau of Economic Research, in which he demonstrated interdisciplinary engagement with labor markets and doctoral education outcomes. His scholarship bridges theory and empirical evidence and has contributed to the discipline’s understanding of choice, competition, and information in economic systems. Patrick is also a frequent presenter at academic conferences and professional workshops, where he shares insights on both substantive research and innovations in pedagogy. His presentations often focus on evidence-based approaches to teaching economics and improving student engagement in core economic principles.

Beyond traditional scholarship, Patrick is known for the Econ Guy available on YouTube. Econ Guy is a series of short, accessible instructional videos that explain foundational and current-issue economic concepts. These videos—covering topics such as trade, taxation, welfare policy, and minimum wage debates—are used by students and educators across institutions as supplemental learning tools.
